Research Organizations:

  • NBER. National Bureau of Economic Research; the leading economics association in the U.S.
  • AEAWeb - from the American Economic Association; offers electronic editions of the American Economic Review and the Journal of Economic Literature. Also provides help with the JEL Classification system.
  • Society for Computational Economics. Deals in research in computational modeling, computational econometrics and statistics, finance, and a variety of computational tools.
  • Link for Economics Departments for non-US universities, arranged alphabetically by country. Provided by the University of Victoria.
  • BREAD. Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development (Harvard)
  • CID. Center for International Development (Harvard) CID Data
  • SIEPR. Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (Stanford)

Data Sources:

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics. Comprehensive data on inflation and consumer spending, wages, productivity, health and safety, and unemployment and employment data, among others.
  • Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. A database of 19,523 US time series, downloadable in MS Excel format and graphs.
  • US Census. An excellent data source for sectoral economic data, historic data, statistics by geography and frequency.
  • Current Population Survey (CPS). A monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics; the primary source of information on the labor force characteristics, including employment, unemployment, earnings, hours of work, and other indicators. They are available by a variety of demographic characteristics including age, sex, race, marital status, educational attainment, occupation, industry, and class of worker.
  • Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).  Provides information about income and program participation of individuals and households in the United States; offers detailed information on cash and noncash income on a subannual basis. The survey also collects data on taxes, assets, liabilities, and participation in government transfer programs.
  • Panel Study of Income Dynamics. A nationally representative longitudinal study of about 8,000 families; collects data on health, economic, and social behavior.
  • NLS Data. National Longitudinal Surveys; gathers information at many points in time on labor market activity; includes the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1997 and 1979), the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Women and Mature Women, and the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Men and Mature Men (discontinued in 1981).
  • U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The U.S. National Economics Accounts Data, and international, regional and industry-wise data.
  • CompuStat. Standard & Poor's company, index, and industry information data.
  • International Finance Statistics (ITS). The IMF's international data browser. Contains country tables, world tables, commodity prices, and many more.
  • B&E Data Links. Provides economic and financial data from a variety of sources; an effort of the American Statistical Association.
  • ICPSR - The Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research; the world's largest archive of digital social science data.
  • TRAC - Transacational Records Access Clearinghouse: a data center for federal enforcement, staffing, and spending. From Syracuse University.
  • University of Michigan Documents Center - a good source for US government data (local, federal, foreign, international)
  • WebEc - a comprehensive source of data links
